South Island – Lake Tekapo

A trip to New Zealand is not complete without a visit to Lake Tekapo. This small town has been wowing its visitors with an amazing turquoise lake for ages. It is also the world’s first UNESCO recognised Dark Sky Reserve. Which means the skies are almost totally free from light pollution and it is the best stargazing site in New Zealand!

Unfortunately, we were unable to capture the magical galaxy given our mediocre photography skills and equipment. You will just have to make a trip to witness this phenomenal sight yourself! 😛

Little Mount Peel via Deer Spur Track

Don’t be deceived by the name of this track – “Little Mount Peel” is definitely not “Little” at all! In fact, it holds the title of “Our longest and Most Challenging Alpine Summit Track 2019”.

This track is about 1h 20min drive from Lake Tekapo. Honestly, we wished that we had started earlier to allow more time at the summit hut to rest and to enjoy the view. The fact that we only began our hike around mid-day thinking that we could complete the whole track in under 6hrs was mere naivety given the condition of the track. It took us 4hrs to ascend and 3.5 hours back down without much break. The track was muddy and slippery due to the rain and snowfall overnight. There were quite a lot of stairs and large rocky steps to navigate over which slowed us down massively. Our biggest regret was not bringing our hiking poles with us!

We were super motivated and embarrassed at the same time when a group of senior ladies in their 60s, warned us about the challenging terrain at the summit as they descend.

“If they can do it, so can we!” – became the mantra to push ourselves to the summit thereafter. The view on top was incredible and we were relieved that we made it. However, we could only afford a short break, as it will be nightfall by the time we get back to the foot of the mountain.

It was an epic adventure that we will remember for the rest of our lives and we are proud to have done it despite May’s fear, our moderate fitness level and rookie hiking skills.

With this experience under our belt, we look forward to conquering greater heights together in the future! Gambatte!

Ashwick Flat AirBnb

A charming self-contained cabin on a quiet and tranquil farm with breathtaking views of Mt Dobson and Fox Peak right from our bedroom made our last Airbnb for this trip a pretty special one.

We were roused from sleep every morning by the melodious songbirds and the bustling farm activities. At night, we cosied up over a bottle of wine in front of the fireplace while admiring the dark starry sky.

We couldn’t ask for a better finale to wrap up our New Zealand road trip.

Stay tuned for our next post! – 12 days New Zealand Motorhome Experience.
